- ECS:Cations lower in the ECS are discharged more easily at the cathode.
- Concentration:High Cl⁻ favours Cl₂ at inert anodes; with active copper, the anode dissolves instead.
- Electrode nature:Active copper dissolves at the anode in CuSO₄(aq) or conc. NaCl(aq); the latter can also give Cu(OH)₂ precipitate.
- Water ions:In dilute solutions, include H⁺ and OH⁻ from the ionisation of water.
